Protect Yourself from Artificial Intelligence Voice Cloning Scams

Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we live and work—but unfortunately, it’s also making scams more sophisticated. Scammers are now using AI to clone voices with just a few seconds of audio, making it easier than ever to impersonate you or your loved ones.

How AI Voice Cloning Scams Work

Fraudsters can obtain voice recordings in two main ways:
Social Media & Online Recordings – Scammers use AI to scan the internet for voice clips from videos, podcasts, or social media posts.
Phone Call Recordings – If you answer an unknown call and speak—even just saying “Hello?”—scammers can record your voice and use AI to mimic it.

Once they have your voice, they may call family members or friends pretending to be you, claiming you’re in trouble and urgently need money or personal information. These scams are alarmingly realistic, making them harder to detect.

How to Protect Yourself

✅ Let unknown calls go to voicemail – If it’s important, the caller will leave a message.
✅ Limit public voice recordings – Be mindful of what you share online.
✅ Verify the caller – If you receive an unusual request from a loved one, call or text them directly using a known number.
✅ Use a family ‘safe word’ – Choose a word only your close family knows to confirm their identity over the phone.
✅ Report suspicious calls – If you suspect a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
